Course Description: This 8-hour course will include an overview of current social and ethical issues that influence the care of the hospitalized patient. Topics include identifying victims of human trafficking, understanding the types, effects, and uses of marijuana, and strategies to enhance care of the transgender patient. Also included are resources for our caregivers as well as a panel of experts to field questions and discuss cases.

Additionally this conference will feature a poster break-out session highlighting best practice and nursing research projects within St. Joseph Hospital.

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course, the participants should be able to:
* Recognize signs of human trafficking
* Identify local resources for the victim of human trafficking
* Describe medicinal uses of marijuana
* Discuss the effects of THC on the brain
* Examine the effects of marijuana on the fetus and the newborn
* Formulate effective strategies for assessing and communicating with the transgender patient
* Modify care to manage transgender healthcare issues
* Identify available wellness resources for staff
