Abstract

Activity Summary

An acute spinal cord injury (SCI) is a life-changing event that profoundly affects patient well-being. Resuscitation, prevention of complications and early rehabilitation impact functional outcomes and critical care nurses must use scientific evidence to direct their care. This session presents strategies for nurses with an intermediate level of knowledge about SCI care to use evidence-based guidelines to optimize patient outcomes.

Objectives

  • Critique the merits of interventions that helps minimize secondary spinal cord injuries.
  • Discuss evidence-based nursing care that prevents hospital-acquired conditions for patients with an acute spinal cord injury.
  • Construct a plan of care using best practices that facilitate early rehabilitation for patients with an acute spinal cord injury.
