Session Summary

Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) contribute to a majority of hospital-acquired infections. In addition to avoiding patient harm, reducing financial burden is a strong motivator for supporting CLABSI prevention programs. Inspired by the Clinical Scene Investigator (CSI) model previously implemented by their colleagues the CAUTIHAWKS, a team of nurses from the Swedish Medical Center Intensive Care Unit set out to reduce the incidence of CLABSI through education and practice changes. Multimedia education, staff incentives and team branding helped promote staff engagement. This session examines the costs of CLABSI, the tools employed for prevention and the role of the nurse manager to ensure project success. The tools used are presented to encourage other institutions to implement CLABSI prevention programs.
